The Ekdal family
Ekdaluskin opens on Ekdal, a Scandinavian name made of ek, oak, and dal, valley: the oak valley. It is the name of the family at the heart of The Wild Duck (1884), Henrik Ibsen's play: Hjalmar Ekdal the photographer, his father Old Ekdal who hunts in the attic, and his daughter Hedvig, who keeps a wounded wild duck.
