Frequently Asked Questions
Introduction
What is this ?
It's a tool to help you navigate in the No Man's Sky universe. It's (almost) a Geographical Information System (GIS) for No Man's Sky.
What can it do ?
- navigate in the universe
- decode glyphs
- chart unknown systems
- it's building the biggest database of NMS systems ever
Why ?
- it was fun to create :)
- I wanted to share it with the community
- I wanted to help players navigate in NMS
How to get Glyphs in No Man's Sky ?
Read the glyphs page
Glyphs Decoder
- very easy to use
- click on the glyphs !
- see the validity of your address as you enter it (it's probabilistic so it's not 100% accurate)
- you will be redirected to the system page automatically when the address is complete
- you can use portal code, by typing the numbers and letters in the glyphs bar
- you can paste your portal code in the glyphs bar
- you can paste your galactic address in the glyphs bar
- in expert mode it's the same, but within a specific page with glyphs show in a grid rather than a row
Spacial Navigation
All areas are define in the zoning document
Galaxy Selection
- one page to choose your galaxy from the 1st to the 256th /galaxy
- search, select, type in the number, use the grid, etc.
Galaxy
- one page per galaxy, with a heatmap and 3D views, 'top 25' of the most visited systems
- an interactive map of the galaxy, zoom in and out, pan, etc. and click to go to your target
- you can type glyphs to go to this specific galaxy portal Euclid
- example: Euclid
Core
- one page for the core
- real 3D view of the core, navigation is possible
- list of all regions near the core of the galaxy
- one core page for each galaxy
- example in Euclid: core
Quadrant

- example in Euclid: region « Hiwi’urv »
System
Common to all systems
- 3D view of the approximate location of the system in the galaxy
- planets visualizations (stellar map and horizontal view)
- the colors under the glyphs row show you the probability of the system to be valid, based on its glyphs :
- green : known, valid or high probability
- orange : low probability, uncertain
- red : unreachable or invalid
- ssi in gold for Atlas Station
- ssi in black for Blackhole
- ssi in purple for Purple Systems
- the coloring is not absolute, it's a probability
- 3 columns of data :
- the first column is general location (galaxy, quadrant, region, R0),
- the second column is the system data (planets, spectral type, SSI, etc.)
- the third column is the local data (inhabitants, wealth, economy, etc.)
System Data
- Glyphs (Portal) address
- Galactic Address
- Galactic Coordinates X, Y, Z
- glyphs URL (tiny url)
- unique QR code for each system
- Spacial coordinates (Cube, Block, Sector, Quadrant, Galaxy)
- Region data (name, civilized, etc.)

- hover over an element to get more details (about the system, the region, the quadrant, etc.)
- you can move to the nearest atlas, blackhole, purple system or to a random normal system via shortcuts at the end of the page
- clicking on "Try a nearby address" will move you to a potential valid system, in the same region (for unreachable systems only)
- clicking on a field will copy its content to the clipboard (galactic address, portal address, etc.)
- your travel log (history) is shown at the end of the page
System Export
- export the system page as a PDF file
- export a JSON file for save editing. For power users only, be careful please.
{
"RealityIndex": 0,
"GalacticAddress": {
"VoxelX": 546,
"VoxelY": 34,
"VoxelZ": 546,
"SolarSystemIndex": 121,
"PlanetIndex": 1
}
}
use the URL as it is, it's a valid address. it's just prefix with the galaxy number and an hyphen, then the portal address (ie
glyphs.had.sh/10-107A11111111where 10 is the galaxy number, 107A11111111 is the portal address)
Known Systems
- the system is charted
- the data shown are real
- Data availability and accuracy are variable from one system to another, some are very well mapped, some are not. It's a difficult job to survey a system by hand, so it's not always perfect.
- Examples of data available :
- Inhabitants
- Wealth
- Economy and sector
- Buy / Sell values
- Conflict
- Credits for the discovery
- Sun colors and number
- water, blackhole, atlas
- giant planet, gas giant
- dissonance
- Spectral class and associated data
- etc ...
- example of Known System with full data : Birdy
Blackholes
- In case of explored black hole:
- we show the exit system
- jump length in ligth years
- the gain toward the center of the galaxy
- In the exit system, a link to the origin system is shown
- In case of unexplored black hole, it's show there is a blackhole in the system.
- Example: Tizangj Black Hole
Unknown Systems
- you can chart it by clicking on the "Survey this system" or "Add this system to our database" buttons. Please :)
- the data shown are guessed :
- it's show as a yellow system, there are the most common (will be updated soon for more accuracy)
- it's show with only one star, this is the most common case (91%)
- it's show with 6 planets, this distribution is the most common (41%)
- the real system may be completely different, or unreachable, but it's not possible to know
- the probability of this category of systems to be unreachable is very low (ssi check, voxel check are ok)
- there is a warning message "Should the glyphs be wrong or unrecognized, the portal will stop the sequence and display an in-game message"
- example of Unknown System : Unknown System
Unreachable Systems
- Unknown systems out of range and phantom stars, have the opacity of the page reduced, and some data are blurred. Moving the mouse over the system change the opacity
- Some functions are disabled for out of range and phantom stars (bookmark, survey, QR code, ...)
- In case of phantom stars, you can click on "Try a nearby address" to move to a potential valid system, in the same region
- A text in red is displayed : "Unreachable !"
- the solar system is in the phantom range (most of the time), or the region (voxel) is unreachable (aka in the core or in the fade)
- example of unreachable systems: system in the core, phantom star
Chart a System
- Users can chart a system by using a form
- The form is available on all unknown systems pages with a simple click
- Type your address, click on "Chart" and fill for the form
- The form will be moderated and the system will be charted, available to all users
- Moderation is done by hand, so it may take a few days to get your system charted
- example : chart a system
- you can go directly to the survey page if you know the portal address :
/survey/1-222222222222 (replace 1-222222222222 with your address, 1 is the galaxy, 222222222222 is the system)
the address submitted is save into your "my glyphs" page
Sharing
- click on "Share" button
- depends on your system and browser, the share popup will be use
- there is a fallback to our own share popup if your default one is not available
- you can share the URL as it, it's a valid address
- you can generate a JPG picture of the Glyphs with basic data and QR code
- when you share the URL on a social media, it will show the Glyphs directly in the post (it's a feature of the social media, not us)
- Scan the QR code to open the page
My Glyphs
- page : my glyphs
- manage your history, your bookmarks and your submissions in one place
- import or export your data for safekeeping
- it's recorded in LocalStorage of your browser cache
- it's your realm. It saved in your device, no data is stored on our side.
- you delete your cache, you delete your data
Actions
- delete your history
- delete your bookmarks
- delete your submissions
- delete everything
- mode preferences
- import export
Expert Mode
- when you click on "new address" anywhere, it will open the expert mode
- the breadcrumb will show fully in expert mode
- more to come
Incognito Mode
no history is recorded
Bookmarks
- you can bookmark a system (click on "Bookmark" button)
- bookmarks are saved into your "my glyphs" page
Travel Logs
record your travel history (only the system address)
Submissions
record the addresses you submitted
Import & Export
- import your data from a JSON file
- export your data to a JSON file
Extra
Heatmaps
- grand total of 87 637 png files
- generation take about 20 min. It's a LOT of very small files and database queries.
Humouristic Reviews
- arround 3000 horrible and badly written jokes as fake travel reviews or quotes from NPCs - and they have a lot to say about us.
- they are not real reviews, but they are fun to read
- they are displayed at the end of the system page
- These dad's jokes are store in dadabase. Sorry.
Address is Human Readable
- certain address have a pattern, like 111222111222
- they are "human guessable" addresses
- we try to find patterns in the address
- palindromes, incremental, decremental, etc.
- results are displayed at the end of the page for systems and regions if a pattern is found
Waypoints
- I add 340 waypoints regions for each galaxy. It's not a lot !
- but, it was bigger than expected : 340x256= 87 040 waypoints.
- They are perfect centers of each zones (Cube, Block, Sector, Quadrant, Galaxy).
- They are used to facilitate navigation in the 3D views.
- example : waypoint of cube Δ114
Documentation
- I try to provide comprehensive documentation for the project: docs
- Privacy policy, sources and inspirations, etc. are as well available.
Request For Comments
- I choose my own names for subdivision of Space, expect for 'Quadrant' and 'Core'. I want a discussion about it, and suggestions for better names and conventions.
- the document is here: zoning
API & bots
- the API is a work in progress. Available in the future per use case, contact me to know more.
- if you have a bot (discord bot, etc.) and you want to use it in sync, please contact me
Batch Processing Imports
- batch processing is possible, contact me to sync your stellar knowledge with the database
- Even if you only have a few systems (minimum 100), it's a good way to contribute :
- you can propose spreadsheet files to be imported (excel, etc.).
- you can propose databases (sqlite, firebase, etc.) to be imported
- you can propose text files to be imported (json, csv, html, etc.)
- I may have to customize the import process to add your data. It's a lot of work, so be cool and patient.
- You are always welcome to contribute and you will always be credited
- Remember, you can also use the survey page to chart individual system
SQL Queries and Export
- heavy SQL queries are available on a very motivated request basis, contact me
- It may be necessary for me to code a custom tool so we can both clearly understand what you're asking for
Special Requests (Events, etc.)
For example, if you organise a building event and you want to show it in the system page, you can contact me. I will add the information and flyer to the system page. (a form to add an event will be added in the future)
