About Euclid
Euclid is galaxy 1 of 256 in No Man's Sky, a normal galaxy. The standard odds. The game calls them Imperfect, Improved, Parallel or Rebuilt galaxies, under a cyan hologram. Most of the 256 are normal.
Every traveller starts here: Euclid is the galaxy of the first steps, and the one most travellers still play in. From its centre, the road goes on to Hilbert. Travellers who reach the centre of Iousongola, the 255th galaxy, come back here.
This atlas holds 34 262 charted regions and 60 412 star systems of Euclid, each with its portal address.
Why is it called Euclid?
Euclid (Εὐκλείδης) was a Greek mathematician who worked in Alexandria (الإسكندرية) around 300 BC. He is called the father of geometry. His Elements, thirteen books long, builds the whole of plane and solid geometry from a handful of axioms and postulates, one proof after another. It ruled geometry until the early nineteenth century and stands, with the Bible, among the most translated and studied books in Western history.
The most famous of his postulates is the fifth, the parallel postulate. For two thousand years mathematicians tried to prove it from the others, and failed. Euclidean space, the flat space of straight lines and coordinates, still carries his name.
The name fits the first galaxy well. Every place in it is a coordinate, and a portal address is nothing more than a point on a grid: a region on three axes, then a system, then a planet.
Where every journey begins
Every traveller wakes up in Euclid, next to a crashed ship, on a planet chosen at random under a yellow star: no extreme weather, no aggressive sentinels, nothing exotic, and nothing lush either. That first planet lies roughly 700 000 light years from the centre.
The galaxy map is one of the few to name it in full: "Euclid Galaxy". Seen from above, Euclid is a flat disc with four spiral arms, at 45, 135, 225 and 315 degrees, that do not rotate. Measured by the Forgotten Colonies, it reaches about 819 000 light years from the centre to the edge, where the last systems fade out. Its centre glows white.
Like the four galaxies after it, Euclid also has a hidden name from the game's generator, overridden by the one you know: Hirulloco.
The galaxy everyone shares
Since every journey begins here, most player civilisations live in Euclid: hubs, alliances, bases and events, like the systems of the Galactic Hub, such as Cinder Pearls. Most portal addresses shared online are Euclid addresses: when one leads nowhere, check first that it was not meant for another galaxy.
