From Crete to Mars
Cidoniana sounds like Cydonia, one of the great cities of ancient Crete (Κρήτη), on the site of today's Chania (Χανιά). The Greeks named the quince after it: the apple of Cydonia.
In the twentieth century the name left for Mars. Cydonia is the Martian region where the Viking 1 orbiter photographed, in 1976, the hill that people took for a face.
