A snail in Yoruba

Achatina fulica

Igbinduina opens on ìgbín, the snail in Yoruba, the language of south-west Nigeria. Not a small garden snail: the giant African land snail, prized in Yoruba cooking. It is also the favourite offering of Obatala, the orisha dressed in white, whose gifts must be white: the snail is chosen for its pale, clear blood.

A slow creature for a vast galaxy: take your time.
