The cedar of Japan
Sugiuniam opens on sugi (杉), the Japanese cedar, the tree that covers the mountains of Japan (日本) and lines the old avenues to its temples. On the island of Yakushima (屋久島) some of them have stood for thousands of years: the oldest, Jōmon Sugi (縄文杉), is at least two thousand years old, perhaps far more.
A name rooted for thousands of years.
