A naturalist's trail among the glyphs

The birth system, the first steps, the account's opening entry.

In 2020, « Egurobeok 🐣 » rises out of the account, in « Sufilipe », « Euclid »: 710 000 light-years from middle, farther out than seven in ten of every traveler that ever woke.

The crowded sky opens into his path alone. 8 had marked the early crossing. He marks the rest.

He names it « Pipdrahal IV 🏷️ », in « Eoffut Band 🏘️ », a yellow sun, 650 000 light-years from the middle. His first real mark on the account.

A long while separates these two entries. It happened spring 2022: a « creature », tamed in passing, given the name « Brestzilla » before the trail pulled him onward again. 793 creatures fed by then, this one among the count.

Story started

Beyond the Cradle

What waited past the birth system: the path to the middle, a wreck beyond the Atlas's reach, a derelict signal, a base grown from nothing.

Atlas Path

The main quest leading to the middle of Euclid: Atlas Interfaces found and answered, one by one.

The old story ends around here. The Atlas stands in « Oholoi Boundary ♦️ », a yellow star: 2 planets and 0 moons bearing witness.

That habit had not finished with him. The final interface offers nothing new, only confirmation of everything the earlier ones already said.

Under a Rebel Star

The outlaw questline, at a wreck sitting beyond the Atlas's reach.

From that point the road bends. Somewhere along the chain of coordinates, the line between lawful and outlaw stopped meaning much to him. 1 444 pirates fell on the wrong side of it anyway.

A fleet accretes around the freighter: 8 ships in the hangar, 6 frigates in formation, and « Manta I I » over all of it.

Dreams of the Deep

The derelict freighter questline: a decades-old distress signal and the crew who never made it home.

Then the compass swung. What the deep kept was never treasure. It was an ending, waiting for someone patient enough to find it.

Derelict freighter cleared

Expanding the Base

Hiring the specialists who turn a landing site into a working base: overseer, scientist, weapons technician, farmer.

Then the direction of it all changed. What the overseer's tour teaches him most is how little he had actually been watching, 830 logged species of flora notwithstanding.

Nothing new in kind, only in detail. He hands the scientist a crate of specimens gathered without much thought, and watches them get sorted into something useful.

It carried on from there. Parts for the range come in from stations he barely remembers stopping at.

One more turn of the same wheel. Where there was bare rock, there are now rows that know their own rhythm, tended by someone who is not him.

Artemis Path

The search for Artemis and Apollo, recovered from the wreck of the story; Nada and Polo, keepers of the Nexus, guide what follows.

The story changes here. The account records a meeting that has no witness but the two of them: him, and whatever Artemis is, found where the stars leave no room for anything else.

The same appetite, fed again. He reaches the Nexus expecting solitude, and finds others there. Nada speaks. Polo moves. They have been working on something that reaches beyond one traveler. For the first time, the journey includes more than his own footprints.

The same thread continued. The Anomaly holds one more voice now, running quiet inside a star system nobody will ever reach, waiting for a Holo-Terminus signal to say something back. He still asks whether waiting is any different from being trapped.

Another entry in the same column. He leaps expecting only the fall. He gets a lesson instead, delivered mid-air by a voice that claims to have been the first traveler of all.

Purge

Sixteen glyphs entered, one fork reached, one ending chosen.

The same instinct, acted on twice. How long the Purge takes, the account does not measure in the usual way. It measures in glyphs: sixteen counted, sixteen matched, and then the plain fact of having crossed it, closer to the middle than any entry before this one.

The thread runs on. Every trail he has walked, from the first signal to the fire of the Purge, has had a direction plain enough to follow without much thought, warp after warp, one glyph earned at a time. This one is different. It forks clean in two, offers no marker either way, and waits for him to decide which half belongs to him.

The work continued. It does not look like much: a small technology, the kind he has crafted a hundred times over for lesser purposes. But Remembrance is not lesser, only quiet about it. It is the Atlas's own account of what a traveler carries, folded down into something that fits in a hand and asks to be kept, not used.

Final choice reached Remembrance reached

New Beginnings

What comes immediately after the fork: the trail that opens once the Purge is behind him.

It kept going the way it had been going. The interface offers a clean break the way a river offers a shortcut: fast, easy, and away from everything that made the crossing mean something. He wades past it and keeps to the long way round.

Years later he reaches the closest point: 3 200 light-years from the middle of « Euclid ».

Elsewhere, and not by a little. The account shows one jump: galaxy 1, « Hilbert ».

Stayed

Living Ship

The expedition to grow a living starship, from the Anomaly outward.

None of this follows from the last stretch. A starship met him mid-flight, spoke without words, and pointed him toward a plaque no map would have shown him.

The theme did not let go. The vision fades and the whale of a ship remains, real, waiting, larger than anything he was expecting to answer.

Living ship grown

Settlements

A frontier outpost claimed, named, and left to run on its own.

Then the story finds another footing. Around then, 42 people answer to « Ouessant C A P I T A L E », and « Ouessant C A P I T A L E » answers to him.

It ran on, unchanged in nature. He takes on the role of overseer without much ceremony, and the settlement's fate becomes something he has to answer for.

Settlement founded Settlement quest complete

A Trace of Metal

The questline that turns a hostile sentinel drone into a companion.

The same line of thought, extended. At « Ouessant C A P I T A L E », the machine that once hunted its people now stands guard for them instead.

Off the Main Trail

Pakkilan

What the save account keeps outside any questline: names given, time passed, places returned to.

The through-line ends here. At Pakkilan 🏠 stands « Ouessant- Port De C », a fixed point in a life allergic to them.

« Sceptre De L'Atlas », a large weight in the hand, now carrying a name as well.

Journey's End

The final tally the save file keeps: systems, regions, galaxies, days.

The next stretch has its own weather. By the end, 587 systems, 309 regions, 4 galaxies logged, farther than eight in ten of every journey on account. 36 deaths along the way, more than eight in ten of every traveler on file.

A "tessera" is a single tile in a mosaic. Here, one save, one traveller's journey. It holds the shape of a save without holding the save. That's what makes it anonymous: there's a journey, but no one to trace it back to, just the path itself, laid down like a tile among all the others.
