A naturalist's trail among the glyphs

Pulled straight from a live No Man's Sky save and transformed into a story. What you're reading is something a traveller really did out there

The birth system, the first steps, the account's opening entry.

In 2018, « Piparisj XIX 🐣 » rises out of the account: « The Arm of Awishaya », a yellow star with 6 worlds, 700 000 light-years from the middle.

He names it « Killur VII 🏷️ », in « Iwonshe Cluster », a yellow sun, 690 000 light-years from the middle. His first real mark on the account.

Story started

Beyond the Cradle

What waited past the birth system: the path to the middle, a wreck beyond the Atlas's reach, a derelict signal, a base grown from nothing.

Atlas Path

The main quest leading to the middle of Euclid: Atlas Interfaces found and answered, one by one.

Then it all tilted. The interfaces he visited are behind him now, each one a little dimmer in memory than the last, but the truth they told stays whole.

A fleet accretes around the freighter: 9 ships in the hangar, 35 frigates in formation, and « R H X-1 Xingheliu » over all of it.

Some « triceratops » took to following him months later. Nothing about it was written down beyond that fact.

Atlas lore complete

Dreams of the Deep

The derelict freighter questline: a decades-old distress signal and the crew who never made it home.

Then the account stops rhyming with itself. He reads a crew's fate the way you read a grave: not to change it, only to know it happened.

Derelict freighter cleared

Expanding the Base

Hiring the specialists who turn a landing site into a working base: overseer, scientist, weapons technician, farmer.

Everything after this reads against what came before. Reports come in from outposts the overseer tracks that he has never visited and likely never will. His own fieldwork rides alongside them: 96 species of flora, logged one scan at a time.

The story keeps its shape. The research account ends plainly: specimens catalogued, formulas resolved, terminal complete.

He was still at it. The last shipment of parts makes the trip up from the field, and the weapons research closes out complete.

Nothing new in kind, only in detail. He signs off on the last requisition and the farm is done: staffed, stocked, growing on its own.

Artemis Path

The search for Artemis and Apollo, recovered from the wreck of the story; Nada and Polo, keepers of the Nexus, guide what follows.

What follows was not on any plan. The road he was on, solitary and unremarkable, forks toward Artemis and toward a wrecked machine in the same short stretch of the account.

The same pursuit, another entry. He holds the soul of a Traveller in a shape no bigger than a data chip and decides, at Nada's question, that the kindest thing left to do is let it go. He still wonders if he mistook silence for kindness.

The same thread continued. Time stops moving in one direction here. He learns to read the other directions it takes, if only briefly.

Gone forever

Purge

Sixteen glyphs entered, one fork reached, one ending chosen.

It kept going the way it had been going. How long the Purge takes, the account does not measure in the usual way. It measures in glyphs: sixteen counted, sixteen matched, and then the plain fact of having crossed it, closer to the middle than any entry before this one.

The same line of thought, extended. The middle does not look different from any other ground he has passed through, some light, some old architecture, the ordinary hush of a place far from anything crowded, extreme sentinels patrolling just past the interface. It is different only in what it asks: a decision he cannot hand off to the road, to Remembrance, or to anyone he has met so far, only to himself.

One more turn of the same wheel. Nothing about the relic announces itself. No light, no sound beyond the fading fire. He simply finds it there, at the Purge's end, and understands without being told that it is meant for him, holding what he has already lived through in a form he may never need to consult.

Final choice reached Remembrance reached

New Beginnings

What comes immediately after the fork: the road that opens once the Purge is behind him.

That habit had not finished with him. The interface at the middle offers a full clean sheet, everything he has mapped and named traded for a galaxy that does not exist yet. From the threshold it looks like a steep price. He pays it without flinching, because what is ahead of him is not a loss, it is ground nobody has walked, shaped by his own two hands before he has taken a single step across it.

The memory that stays is a trajectory: bent toward « Uboenda II 🎯 », in « Raquest Void », and then, without explanation, bent away again.

Off the Main Road

Ares Centaura

What the save account keeps outside any questline: names given, time passed, places returned to.

The next part answers to nothing before it. The Euclid galaxy saves one color for last: purple, at Ares Centaura 💜.

« Hexiron Ompan Extr » stands in « Ogenousta Adjunct », under a yellow sky, Idymede 🏠. 54 bases built by then, this the one that lasted.

Naming a tool is a small thing. He did it anyway: « Rhexicon Assault R ».

Purple system reached

Journey's End

The final tally the save file keeps: systems, regions, galaxies, days.

Then the account started keeping a different kind of entry. By the end, 286 systems, 78 regions, 4 galaxies logged, farther than seven in ten of every journey on account. 3 deaths along the way, more than six in ten of every traveler on file.

A "tessera" is a single tile in a mosaic. Here, one save, one traveller's journey. It holds the shape of a save without holding the save. That's what makes it anonymous: there's a journey, but no one to trace it back to, just the path itself, laid down like a tile among all the others.
