Where does this site live?

This is a fan-made project, but it is not run from a single box under a desk. The site is split into three parts, each one hosted in a different data center, on a different network, in a different country, from different provider.

| Role | What it does | Country | |---|---|---| | Ops | Operations: deployment, monitoring, administration | France | | Front | The public website you are reading right now | Bulgaria | | Backup | Backups of the site and of its data | Germany |

Why split things up?

  • Separation of duties: the machine that serves the website is not the machine that holds the backups, and neither of them is the machine used to administer the whole thing. Each one only has what it needs to do its job.
  • Limited blast radius: if one part has a problem, the other two are not affected by it.
  • Independent networks: the three parts do not share a data center or a network, so a single outage or incident cannot take everything down at once.
  • Backups out of reach: the copies of the site live in another country, on another network than the site itself. If the front is lost, the data is not.
  • Cold Backup: Other cold backups exist as well.

What this means for you

All three locations are inside the European Union, in line with our privacy commitments.

What it costs

Running three servers in three countries has a cost. It is a modest one, but it is paid out of my own pocket.

There are no ads and no tracking to pay for it, and there never will be.

One day, I will open a way for you to help fund the long-term future of the project. Until then, nothing is asked of you.
