First Steps: Decode Your First Portal Address

Five minutes to find your way around: get a portal address, type it in, read the system page, then look further.

1. Get a portal address

In the game, a portal address is a sequence of 12 glyphs. You can read it on a portal, in your discoveries, or get it from another player. New to glyphs? Read Glyphs first.

2. Type it in

Open the portal of your galaxy (Euclid is galaxy 1, choose another) and either:

  • click the glyphs one by one,
  • type the code as hexadecimal characters (0-9, A-F),
  • or paste a portal code or a galactic address.

The page tells you as you type whether the address looks valid, and takes you to the system as soon as it is complete.

3. Read the system page

Each value on the page says where it comes from: Confirmed by an explorer, Pending review by moderation, or Predicted from the coordinates. Some addresses lead nowhere, some are archived from an earlier version of the universe. Everything is explained in System page.

4. Do something with it

  • Copy the glyphs or the link, Share it, Save a picture of the address, or scan the QR code with your phone.
  • Bookmark it in My Glyphs.
  • Been there? Confirm a predicted value, or survey the system. See Contributing.
  • Jump to the nearest black hole, the nearest purple star, a random neighbour, or the region around it.

5. Look further

Troubleshooting

  • A portal address is exactly 12 glyphs. Check the galaxy too: the same code leads to a different place in each galaxy.
  • Something looks off? Reload the page. Still wrong? Report a bug: it is probably mine.
