Navigating a Galaxy, from Quadrant to Region
Each galaxy is cut into nested zones, from the whole galaxy down to a single region of 400 light-years. Every zone has its own page, with maps and links to the level below. The names of the zones are this site's own proposal: see Zoning.
Galaxies
- All galaxies: the 256 galaxies, from Euclid (1) to Odyalutai (256), each one a link to its map.
- One page per galaxy, with its map: Euclid.
From the galaxy to the region
- Galaxy: the whole galaxy, shaped like a cardboard pizza box. Example: Euclid
- Quadrant: a quarter of the galaxy. Example: quadrant Δ4
- Sector: a sixteenth. Example: sector α3
- Block: 64 per galaxy. Example: block α11
- Cube: 256 per galaxy (and yes, it is a cube. Oorah!). Example: cube α144
- Region: 400 light-years across, the unit of the game. Example: « Hiwi'urv »
The region page shows the systems known in the region, its neighbourhood in 3D (every region within 24 000 light-years), and lets you type glyphs with the region already filled in.
The core
Each galaxy has a core page: the regions closest to the centre, with a 3D view.
Portals
The portal is where you type an address. There is one per galaxy, and one per region with the last eight glyphs already set: portal « Hiwi'urv ».
Flythrough
The flythrough is a 3D flight through the galaxy, from a quadrant down to a cube and its regions. It needs JavaScript and WebGL; without them, use the classic pages above. How it works: Flythrough.
Waypoints
The exact centre of each zone (cube, block, sector, quadrant) is marked as a waypoint region, so the 3D views always have a landmark to aim for: waypoint of cube Δ114.
