Gas giants in No Man's Sky: how to find them

Where the gas giants of No Man's Sky are, how to find one, and how rare they are: of 393 recorded by players, 391 are in purple star systems.

What is a gas giant?

Gas giants came with the Worlds Part II update, on 29 January 2025, together with purple stars. They are by far the largest worlds of the game, many times the size of an ordinary planet, wrapped in endless storms. Reaching their surface needs well upgraded equipment.

Gas giants are in purple systems

The catalogue of this site leaves little doubt: out of 393 gas giants recorded by players, 391 are in purple star systems. The two others are most likely typing mistakes.

So the first step to a gas giant is the first step to purple stars: finish the mission In Stellar Multitudes and build the Atlantid Drive. See Purple stars.

How rare are they?

On one million systems predicted across Euclid, 1.7 % of systems hold a gas giant, never more than one. Purple systems being 11.7 % of all systems, that makes roughly one purple system in seven with a gas giant.

How to find one

  • On the galaxy map: once purple stars are open, look at purple systems one by one. A system with a gas giant says so in its description.
  • By portal: purple systems sit at system numbers 3E9 to 429 (glyphs 2 to 4) of every region. Dial one, after the mission, and check.
  • On this site: ask the Oracle for a "gas giant near" a region, or look for the gas giant mark on system pages.

Record what you find

A gas giant is a landmark. Contribute the system, with its address, so the next traveller finds it in one jump.
