Which galaxy am I in? How to know your No Man's Sky galaxy
How to tell which of the 256 No Man's Sky galaxies you are in, turn its name into a number, and find the galaxy of an address someone shared.
Look at the galaxy map or photo mode
Open the galaxy map: the game shows the name of the galaxy you are in.
Photo mode shows it too: at the bottom of the screen, next to the portal glyphs, the name of the galaxy is written in full. It is the quickest way to get both the address and its galaxy in one screenshot.
Both give the name, not the number. The list of the 256 galaxies gives both.
Every journey starts in Euclid
Every new save starts in Euclid, galaxy 1. You stay in it until you go through the centre: each crossing takes you one galaxy further, and only one.
- No crossing: Euclid, galaxy 1.
- One crossing: Hilbert, galaxy 2.
- Two crossings: Calypso, galaxy 3.
Your galaxy number is the number of crossings, plus one. Black holes and portals never change the galaxy: a black hole brings you closer to the centre of the same one, and a portal only reaches addresses in the galaxy you are in. See Crossing a galaxy.
Joining a friend's game is the other way to change galaxy: you arrive where they are, in their galaxy.
The first ten galaxies
- 1 Euclid
- 2 Hilbert
- 3 Calypso
- 4 Hesperius
- 5 Hyades
- 6 Ickjamatew
- 7 Budullangr
- 8 Kikolgallr
- 9 Eltiensleen
- 10 Eissentam
All 256, with their type (normal, lush, harsh or empty) and their colour on the map: see the galaxies and Galaxy types.
The galaxy of a shared address
Glyphs do not say which galaxy they belong to. The same twelve glyphs lead to another system in each galaxy, and it is the first cause of an address that leads to the wrong planet.
- Ask. Whoever shared the address knows which galaxy they were in.
- Read the link. On this site, the galaxy number is in front of every address: in
glyphs.had.sh/10-1157CE589C1E,10is Eissentam. - Read the post. Communities usually write the galaxy next to the glyphs. Without it, Euclid is the safest guess: it is where most players live.
Your save knows
Your save records the galaxy of every system you discovered. Write my story reads it in your browser, without uploading it, and tells the journey galaxy by galaxy. See Stories.
