Why does my portal address lead to the wrong planet?

A No Man's Sky portal address that leads elsewhere has one of six causes: wrong galaxy, first glyph, typo, game update, locked purple star, old platform.

1. You are in the wrong galaxy

This is the most common cause by far. A portal address only works in the galaxy it was written for: the same twelve glyphs lead to another system in Hilbert, another again in Calypso, and so on through all 256 galaxies. No portal crosses from one galaxy to another.

Check the galaxy where the address was shared, and the one you stand in. On this site, every address carries its galaxy in front: 1-1157CE589C1E is in Euclid, galaxy 1. See the galaxies.

2. The first glyph is not the planet you wanted

The first glyph picks a planet inside the system, from 1 to 6. With the wrong one, you arrive in the right system, on another world. If the system is right but the planet is not, change only that first glyph.

3. One glyph is off

Twelve symbols are easy to mistype, and some look alike. Paste or type the address in the portal decoder of your galaxy: it shows the glyphs one by one, with their names (Sunset, Bird, Face…), so you can compare them with the portal.

Some players also report the portal entering the Bird glyph on its own as the first symbol. If the address starts wrong every time, clear it and dial again.

4. The game changed the place

The universe of No Man's Sky has been rewritten several times: Atlas Rises in 2017, NEXT in 2018, then Origins and Worlds. An address from an old video, forum post or wiki page can lead to a place that no longer looks like the one described, or no longer exists as it was.

Check the date of the source. On this site, a system page says when an older reading of the place exists, with a link to it. See Updates that changed the universe.

5. The system is a purple star you have not unlocked

Purple star systems sit at system numbers 3E9 to 429 (glyphs 2 to 4). Until you finish the mission In Stellar Multitudes, portals act as if they did not exist and send you to another system. See Purple stars.

6. The address comes from a PlayStation or Xbox save before late 2020

Until the Next Generation update, on 10 November 2020, the platforms did not share one universe: an address could lead to one system on PC and another on PlayStation or Xbox. Addresses written down before that date may not match what you see now. This site keeps more than 750 such readings as historical records.

Check an address before you travel

Type the galaxy and the address in the address bar, like glyphs.had.sh/1-1157CE589C1E, or use the portal decoder. The system page tells you where the address leads: its region, what players recorded there, and what can be predicted from the coordinates. See Use direct URL.
